Child Advocates of Silicon Valleys’ 12th Annual Golf Classic was a huge success, raising more than $150,000 to benefit foster youth in Santa Clara County. At the tournament, we also honored Atherton resident and current Board Member Howard Slayen with the Walter “Skip” Shaw Inspiration Award for his philanthropic work in the community.
The Walter “Skip” Shaw Inspiration Award, named for the man who created the Golf Classic and who gave selflessly to Child Advocates, was created to recognize those like him who demonstrate generosity of spirit and commitment to the community.
For over a decade, Howard Slayen’s passion for helping foster youth, combined with his strong analytical skills, has provided guidance for Child Advocates and our board of directors. Howard first joined the agency as a CASA in 2004 and has advocated for six teens boys during his tenure as a CASA. In 2007, Howard joined the board of directors, bringing with him 40 years of experience as an attorney, CPA and CFO. Howard is currently serving in his 12th year as a board member.
Howard is always generous with his time, thoughtful in his approach and committed to helping others succeed. Child Advocates of Silicon Valley thanks Howard for his work on our board, his passion as a CASA and his support as a donor.
“Child Advocates’ salutes Howard for donating his time, energy and talent as a board member for twelve years. Howard has served as an officer, a member of multiple committees and was a critical contributor to the agency’s strategic plan to provide a CASA for every foster child in Santa Clara County’s dependency system. He is a terrific role model and true inspiration,” said Karen Scussel, Child Advocates Executive Director.
Over 100 golfers participated in the Golf Classic at Los Altos Golf and Country Club on Aug. 28, 2017. Monies generated from the event will be used to recruit, train and support Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) to work one-on-one with foster children in the Santa Clara County dependency system. During the past 11 years, the event has raised more than $2,000,000 for foster children. Since 1986, Child Advocates has served over 16,000 children with a CASA volunteer.
