Every once in a while, you meet an individual who goes above and beyond for your nonprofit and other charities in the community. That pretty much describes Mike Byrd. Child Advocates' honored Mike at our 11th Annual Golf Classic on Aug. 29th. The tournament raises much needed funds to help us recruit, train and support CASA volunteers to work one-on-one with children in foster care.
During the evening program, Karen Scussel, Executive Director of Child Advocates, presented Mike with the Walter “Skip” Shaw Inspiration Award for his philanthropic work in the community. The award recognizes those who demonstrate generosity of spirit and commitment to the community.
In 2003, Mike joined Child Advocates’ Board of Directors after advising and working in start-up entrepreneurial environments for more than 20 years. During his nine-year board stint, Mike twice served as Board Chair, providing guidance and expertise as the agency created an ambitious five-year strategic plan to provide a CASA for every foster child in Santa Clara County.
Mike and his wife Liz have been long-time benefactors of Child Advocates and have introduced the agency to many supporters. They made their home available for major donor events and other fundraising efforts that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Child Advocates. Just as important, Mike has helped recruit new board members and spread the word about our mission and work in the community.
A long-time advocate for teenage foster youth, Mike has helped fund Child Advocates’ programs that keep these often overlooked young men and women off the streets and in programs that help them grow into responsible, productive adults.
His volunteer work and generous gifts to Child Advocates and other nonprofits in our community is an inspiration to us all.
