Celebrating Academic Success
Child Advocates is excited to announce that we will hold our second annual "Teen Celebration" this May. The event will honor our youth's academic success during the 2011-2012 school year and will be held at the beautiful Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose. Silver Creek has graciously allowed us to use their wonderful ballroom at a reduced cost. The ballroom will certainly provide the perfect ambiance to honor our youth in a very special way. The celebration is completely youth-centered and will involve an evening of eating, sharing and, most importantly, recognizing our high school juniors and seniors for all that they have accomplished! Over 70 youth and Advocates have been invited to attend. Many will be the first in their family to graduate from high school, and some will be the first in their family to attend college. Several vendors are supporting the event by offering their services for free or at reduced cost. We look forward to providing our youth with gifts to encourage their future academic success. It is our greatest wish that they will leave the event feeling proud and inspired by the wonderful things they have achieved. It also provides an opportunity to thank our Advocates for their education-focused activities. 85% of our seniors are on track to graduate this year! |
Advocate Story Continued
Advocating for a Newborn
The last five months were very tumultuous for this fragile family! The baby's mom struggled to meet all of the requirements of her case plan, and her social worker and I experienced growing concerns. Her landlord asked her to move out of her home of four years due to late payments. Losing her housing caused the family a variety of issues as the single mom struggled to find a new place. After coming close to being homeless, the baby's aunt helped the family find a small, two-room apartment. However, less than a month after she moved in, the Drug Court Team decided that supported housing was a better option. The team includes numerous professionals, an attorney, a social worker, a domestic violence expert, a representative from the Department of Alcohol and Drug Services, a mental health professional and a therapeutic housing person. Their concerns included missed tests and failure to complete the parenting class. Mom's ability to meet her rent obligation was also cited.
Interacting with the Drug Court team, I shared their concern that the baby received his inoculations late. As the baby's mom had just completed her move after tremendous personal effort, she was very sad about the recommendation that she move into therapeutic housing. At her last court hearing, she decided to accept the recommendation after admonishment from the judge. I saw her discouraged by this difficult decision. Clearly she felt it represented a failure on her part to live independently. Despite being overwhelmed, she continued to meet all of the baby's immediate needs and was doing an overall good job as a mom. When we spent time together, I affirmed her parenting and suggested small steps to achieve her goals of employment, a driver's license, visits with her older boy and her own place. After much indecisiveness, she called me to say that she had finally resolved to accept the offer of a room in a staffed group home. I believed the decision was concrete evidence of her willingness to do what was necessary to keep her baby.
Disappointingly, when her tests and behavior put the placement in jeopardy, mom and baby moved in briefly with a long-time babysitter and friend. Finally, in June stability was achieved when the Drug Court team secured placement for mom and baby at House on the Hill, a residential facility located at a distance from San Jose. Five changes of residence in five months!

KLA-Tencor
Presenting Sponsor for S pring Event
Child Advocates is happy to announce a new corporate partner:fKLA-Tencor Corporation. The company will be the Presenting Sponsor for our upcoming Spring Event - Star Chefs and the Wines They Love - to be held on April 29th at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. This generous sponsorship was granted to Child Advocates by the SWIFT and Candela Divisions of KLA-Tencor, headed by Frank Burkeen, VP/GM, Candela Division, and Oreste Donzella, VP/GM, Swift Division. Their teams received an Outstanding Growth Achievement Award from the KLA-Tencor Foundation for meeting performance goals set by the corporation. The winning teams were given the opportunity to select a local community organization to receive both volunteer hours and a $25,000 grant.
We are very thankful the KLA-Tencor teams chose Child Advocates to support both financially and personally.
Mr. Burkeen has some personal connections to foster children and knows firsthand how vital it is for them to have a caring adult in their lives. KLA-Tencor is also providing over 50 volunteers for the Spring Event. In addition, their video department is creating a video spotlighting our work to be shown at the event. We are so grateful for this new partnership and look forward to working together to make a difference in the lives of many deserving children.

Child Advocates |
|
Child Advocates of Silicon Valley serves abused and neglected children in the Santa Clara County foster care system by providing a trained, dedicated volunteer to advocate for the child's best interests. The volunteer spends time with the child and becomes a trusted friend, mentor, and consistent adult presence. Working with the foster parents, teachers, social workers, counselors and others gives the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) a complete picture of the child's life and needs. |
